Lack of such care during childhood can lead to serious complications in children and continue in adulthood. <a href=\"http:\/\/sterlingdentalclinic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Pedodontist (Pediatric dentist) (opens in a new tab)\">Pedodontist (Pediatric dentist)<\/a> is the dental specialist who is specialized to handle dental problems in kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When is the first dental visit for a child?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Child\u2019s first dental visit should be by his\/her\nfirst birthday or within six months afterthe child\u2019s first tooth erupts. Milk teeth\nusually erupt by 6-7 months of age. Complete set of milk teeth erupt by 3 years\nof age. Milk teeth are to be safeguarded for overall health of the child. They\ndo following functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Proper diet- If decayed\nteeth are present, child cannot eat properly and dietary deficiency and\nmalnutrition are seen in the child. Maintaining milk teeth properly helps child\nto take proper diet.<\/li><li>Proper speech\ndevelopment- proper alignment of milk teeth helps child to speak all the\nsyllables properly and improve the speech.<\/li><li>Adult teeth- proper\nalignment of milk teeth helps in the proper alignment of adult teeth. <\/li><li>Overall health- overall\nhealth of the child depends on the oral health. So child be taken for regular\nvisits to the dentist to know the status of the child\u2019s oral health.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Oral health care tips for a child:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Oral health care should\nstart even before the tooth erupts. For infants, use a wet gauze\/cloth to wipe\nthe gums.<\/li><li>Avoid bed time feeding\nother than water after the first tooth erupts.<\/li><li>Child should start\nbrushing by the age of eighteen months. Use a soft suitable brush without a tooth\npaste.<\/li><li>Use a small smear of\ntooth paste after 2 years of age.<\/li><li>Use a pea sized tooth\npaste between 3-6 years of age.<\/li><li>Brush twice daily.<\/li><li>Child should brush\nunder supervision of parents up to 8 years of age.<\/li><li>Fluoride containing\ntooth paste is always recommended since fluoride has antibacterial, remineralization\nproperties which protect child\u2019s teeth against cavities.<\/li><li>Child should always\nbrush in a circular\/ rolling motion.<\/li><li>Child\u2019s diet also\nshould be supervised. Check if child is having more amount of sugars, sticky\nfoods, or frequents snacks which can make food retain on child\u2019s teeth and\nattacked by bacteria resulting in tooth decay.<\/li><li>In case of any broken\ntooth, clean the area with warm salt water and apply ice if the area is swollen\nand consult the doctor immediately.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are pit and fissure sealants?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pits and fissures are usually present on the back\nteeth. Sometimes, they are very deep making the child difficult to clean those\nareas. As a result decay may start in those areas due to entrapped food.In high\ncaries risk children, dentist may seal the pits and fissure present on the\nteeth using sealants to prevent the teeth from decay.
