Holistic dentistry, without amalgam
Care that considers your whole health: metal-free materials, the least treatment that does the job, and every option explained before we begin.
Our approach
Your mouth is part of the rest of you
Holistic dentistry, also called biological dentistry, looks at your dental health together with your overall physical and emotional health. At The Sterling Dental Clinic we combine that view with modern, evidence-based dentistry: we diagnose carefully, prevent where we can, and treat with materials chosen for your body as well as your teeth.
We do not use amalgam or nickel to fill cavities. Instead we use tooth-coloured composite resin, and ceramic or gold where a stronger restoration is needed.
Dr. Tarun Kumar Giroti takes the time to explain your condition and your options, for example a filling versus an inlay or onlay, so the choice suits your health, your wishes and your budget.
What it means at Sterling
Six things you can expect
Your whole health, not just one tooth
We ask about your medical history, medicines and worries before we plan anything, because your mouth is part of the rest of you.
No amalgam, no nickel
Cavities are filled with tooth-coloured composite resin. We do not place amalgam (silver) or nickel fillings.
Materials chosen with care
Over his years of practice, Dr. Tarun has narrowed his materials to composite, porcelain (ceramic) and gold.
Least treatment that does the job
We keep as much of your natural tooth as possible and explain when a simple filling is enough and when an inlay, onlay or crown is better.
Options that suit you
Each choice is explained with its cost, so you can decide what fits your health, your wishes and your budget.
Ask us anything
Which materials we use, how we take X-rays, how we sterilise instruments and dispose of clinical waste: ask, and we will show you.
How we work
Isolated with a rubber dam
For fillings, root canals and ceramic restorations, our dentists work under a rubber dam: a thin sheet that isolates the tooth being treated from the rest of your mouth.
It keeps the tooth dry while a tooth-coloured filling or ceramic bonds, keeps water, debris and old filling material out of your mouth, and protects your tongue and cheeks. It is also what makes the safe removal of old amalgam fillings possible: nothing from the old filling is swallowed or breathed in. Here Dr. Shivangi Kumar Batra, our endodontist, treats a tooth under a rubber dam at Sterling.
Questions
Holistic dentistry: common questions
What is holistic (biological) dentistry?+
An approach that looks at your oral health as part of your overall physical and emotional health. At Sterling it means careful choice of materials, the least invasive treatment that works, and time spent explaining your options, combined with modern conventional dentistry where that is what your teeth need.
Should I have my old silver (amalgam) fillings removed?+
Usually not. Dr. Tarun does not recommend removing sound amalgam fillings just to replace them: drilling out a filling that is still working removes healthy tooth, costs money and causes stress. When an old amalgam filling breaks down and needs redoing anyway, we replace it with a tooth-coloured material.
Which materials do you use instead of metal?+
Tooth-coloured composite resin for most fillings, ceramic (porcelain) for inlays, onlays and crowns, and gold where it is the right choice. Many ceramic crowns are made in a single visit with CEREC.
Is holistic dentistry more expensive?+
Not necessarily. A composite filling is a routine treatment. Where an inlay, onlay or crown is an option, we explain the cost of each choice before you decide.
