A metal-free, tooth-coloured implant made of zirconia ceramic, for patients who prefer to avoid metal in the mouth. Part of Sterling's holistic approach to dentistry.
About the treatment
A ceramic implant does the same job as a titanium one: it replaces the root of a missing tooth, and a crown is fixed on top. The difference is the material. Ceramic implants are made of zirconia, a strong, white ceramic, so there is no metal in the implant.
Holistic dentistry looks at your mouth as part of your overall health, and many patients ask for a metal-free option for that reason. Because zirconia is white, it also avoids the grey shadow a metal implant can sometimes show through thin gums at the front of the mouth.
Not every case suits a ceramic implant. Your CBCT scan, your bone, your bite and the position of the missing tooth decide whether ceramic or titanium is the better choice, and Dr. Tarun Kumar Giroti will explain the options for your case.
At Sterling
01
Zirconia implants with no metal, for patients who prefer to avoid it or have a metal sensitivity.
02
The bone, nerves and sinus are mapped before the implant is placed, so the choice of material is made on your scan.
03
The crown on your implant is designed and made at Sterling and matched to your natural teeth.
04
12,000+ implants as lead surgeon, in more than 31 years of practice.
What to expect
A full examination and a 3D scan, and a discussion of whether ceramic or titanium suits your case.
The implant position and the final crown are planned on screen before treatment.
The zirconia implant is placed under local anaesthesia; sedation is available.
The implant bonds with the bone over the following weeks to months, as with any implant; your dentist will tell you the time for your case.
The final ceramic crown, made in the in-house lab, is fitted and checked for bite and comfort.

Questions
An implant made of zirconia, a strong white ceramic, instead of titanium. It replaces the tooth root, and a crown is fixed on top, just like a titanium implant.
Yes. The implant itself is zirconia ceramic, and the crown on top can also be metal-free ceramic.
Neither is better for everyone. Titanium has the longest clinical record and suits almost every case. Ceramic is chosen for patients who want a metal-free option or for some front teeth. Your scan and bite decide which suits you.
It depends on the case. Most full-arch treatments use titanium implants; ask Dr. Tarun Kumar Giroti whether a ceramic option suits yours.
The cost depends on the implant, the crown and whether grafting is needed. Every case is quoted after a consultation and CBCT scan.
