Full-Mouth Implants in India for American Seniors: A Planning Guide

For older Americans considering full-mouth implants abroad: what Medicare covers, US vs India full-arch costs, fitness to travel, companions and the two visits.

By the Sterling Dental Clinic teamPublished 28 September 2026Clinically reviewed by Dr. Tarun Kumar Giroti, MDS, Dental Council of India reg. A1730, on 6 October 2026

Many Americans reach retirement with failing teeth or loose dentures, and discover that full-mouth implants are one of the largest out-of-pocket health costs they will face. This guide is for them, and for the adult children helping them plan.

What Medicare covers

Medicare.gov states that in most cases, Medicare doesn't cover dental services such as cleanings, fillings, extractions, or items like dentures and implants, with limited exceptions tied to covered medical treatment (Medicare.gov). Many Medicare Advantage plans offer some extra dental benefits, which vary by plan (Medicare.gov). Check your own plan before comparing costs.

Is it right for you?

  • General health. Heart conditions, blood thinners, diabetes and bone medicines all need to be in your medical history before planning (who should not travel).
  • Age. Implants work in older patients; one long-term review found somewhat lower 10-year survival over 65, but still high overall (Howe et al., 2019).
  • Fitness to fly. New York to Delhi is about 14–16 hours. Ask your doctor about long flights, and consider an aisle seat and walking breaks.

Bringing a companion

Up to two companions can travel on e-Medical Attendant visas linked to the patient's e-Medical visa (official portal). Many seniors come with a spouse or an adult child; for Indian-American families, a relative in Delhi often helps too.

Two visits, planned in advance

  1. 1

Send a CBCT or OPG and medical history

Your US dentist or an imaging centre can provide the scan.

  2. 2

    Video consultation

Options, number of implants, and whether grafting is likely.

  3. 3

Visit 1: 7–14 days in Delhi

Scan, surgery, a fixed temporary bridge and reviews. You fly home with fixed teeth.

  4. 4

Visit 2: about two weeks, 3–6 months later

Once the implants have bonded with the bone, the final bridge is fitted and checked.

  5. 5

    Home, with records

Your US dentist takes over routine care (what they need).

Frequently asked questions

Does Medicare cover dental implants?+

In most cases, no. Medicare.gov says Medicare doesn't cover dental services such as dentures and implants, with limited exceptions. Some Medicare Advantage plans include limited dental benefits.

Am I too old for dental implants?+

Age alone rarely rules implants out. What matters is general health, bone and medicines, which is why your medical history is reviewed first.

Can my son or daughter come with me?+

Yes. Up to two companions can travel on e-Medical Attendant visas.
